Cochlear Implant Program

"An opportunity, NOT a cure."

St. Mary's School for the Deaf provides the largest Cochlear Implant Program in the Western New York area, incorporating a Total Communication approach, pre- and post- operative speech therapy, and an educational program which meets the needs of all implanted students.

What is a cochlear implant? A Cochlear Implant
a state-of-the-art hearing device with internal and external components providing access to sound
Who is it for?
children/adults with sensorineural hearing loss who are unable to benefit from conventional hearing aids
What is involved?
  • pre-surgical evaluation
  • surgical intervention
  • intensive post-surgical therapies including:
    • listening skills
    • speech therapy
    • educational programming

What is the cost?
cost is covered by most health insurance plans on a case-by-case basis
