John A. Borkowski
A seasoned educator with over three decades of experience, John A. Borkowski is dedicated to empowering Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. As a skilled educator, coach, and American Sign Language (ASL) instructor, he creates inclusive and engaging learning environments that foster critical thinking and cultural awareness.
As a Lead Teacher for ASL/Social Studies at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, John develops and implements innovative curriculum. He provides individualized support to students, leverages technology, and collaborates with colleagues to ensure academic success.
Beyond the classroom, John has coached varsity girls' basketball and volleyball teams, inspiring athletes to reach their full potential. He is also an adjunct ASL professor at IUPUI and a driver's education instructor for deaf adults.
A proud member of the Willard American Sign Language Teachers Association and the Indiana Association of the Deaf, John is committed to excellence, equity, and accessibility in education. His contributions have been recognized throughout his career.
Prior to his career in education, John worked as a Computer Specialist and Webmaster for government agencies for 13 years, including serving as the National Disability Manager for the U.S. Forest Service. Since transitioning to education in 2000, he has taught at six different deaf schools, both part-time and full-time, covering subjects like social studies while also coaching Varsity Girls Basketball, Volleyball, and Academic Bowl.
With 16 years of experience teaching ASL part-time at three universities and deaf organizations, he now serves as a professor of Deaf Studies and American Sign Language (ASL) at Purdue University.
John is married to Sharon Zuhlke, a proud graduate of St. Mary’s (1988), and they have two children. Throughout his career, he has held numerous volunteer roles, including Spike-Out Chair, Academic Bowl Regional Tournament Chair, Committee Chair of CEASD, Tutor Coordinator, Museum Curator, SBG Sponsor, and Class Sponsor.
