Speech and Language Therapy

The speech-language pathologists at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf diagnose and treat speech and language disorders in individuals birth to 21 years old. They collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators, and support staff to provide the most appropriate and effective communication plan for your child. A speech-language disorder is an impairment in the ability to understand and/or express thoughts and ideas. It may affect speaking, reading, writing, processing information or interacting socially. The therapists work with students who benefit from American Sign Language (ASL) and Spoken English, they assess the needs of each individual and support whichever communication method is most effective and beneficial to the student and their family .  In addition, SLPs at SMSD have specialized training in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and work with students who require Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) and dynamic devices including Tobii Dynavox (direct select and eye gaze).
