Parent Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures

  • Parents or bus staff (not SMSD staff) must fasten students into car seats and/or safety belts
  • If a parent drives a child to school and arrives after 8:30, they need to park in a legal spot on-campus; walk the child to switchboard; and wait with their child until the classroom staff can come to get their child

Here, our language-rich environment supports children from Preschool to 5th Grade.  Our academic program focuses strongly on language development.  Fundamental language goals extend across all subjects, including core curriculum as well as arts, music, and other special classes.  We also foster social language and communication skills to help students build self-confidence and nurture character development.  Our teachers use a variety of presentation methods, activities, and technology to meet the goals of our diverse student needs.  Our students participate in the rigorous New York State Assessments and follow New York State curriculum standards.  They also participate in a number of extra-curricular opportunities, such as music performances, athletics, and family activities.

In addition, SMSD offers an Alternative class setting and a Special Needs Achievement Program (SNAP) at the Elementary level. These classes are specific to children with more severe and multiple needs, geared toward addressing the individual abilities of each child through a comprehensive, individualized, hands-on learning program.

All students attending our Elementary Program are offered Speech and Language Therapy services as mandated by their Individual Education Plan(s) or IEPs.  We offer additional on-site related services such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Counseling, and Adapted Physical Education classes as needed.  Our speech-language pathologists and other therapists work directly with classroom teachers as a support team for each student.

Overall, our Elementary Program looks to the individual needs of all the students to prepare them for their move into our Middle School and High School areas, and to encourage future success as they grow into young adults.
