Christopher Kerr, M.D.
Dr. Christopher Kerr, MD, PhD, is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer of Hospice Buffalo. Joining Hospice Buffalo in 1999 as the Medical Director for the organization's 22-bed Inpatient Unit, he served in this role until 2011, when he was appointed Chief Medical Officer.
Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Dr. Kerr hails from a lineage of physicians, making him the fifth generation in his family to practice medicine. He holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology, a Doctorate of Medicine, and a PhD in Neurobiology. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Rochester. Throughout his training, Dr. Kerr received numerous awards recognizing his clinical excellence, teaching abilities, and scientific contributions.
Dr. Kerr's research interests have evolved from bench science to the human experience of illness, particularly patients' dreams and visions at the end of life. His research findings have garnered significant national and international attention, with coverage in publications such as The New York Times, Huffington Post, The Atlantic, BBC, Scientific American, and Psychology Today.
Under Dr. Kerr's leadership, Hospice Buffalo has integrated and expanded palliative care services into local hospitals and developed one of the nation's largest home-based palliative care programs, Home Connections and Essential Care for Children. He is a frequent lecturer and author on innovative program models designed to better align patient and family services with the complex needs of advanced illness.
Dr. Kerr became involved with St. Mary’s many years ago as a volunteer physician and later joined the board. He considers it a privilege to be affiliated with SMSD, an organization with a rich history within the community and beyond. He is inspired by the organization's powerful and evolving mission.
